Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening during the next day or so is forecast, and Kate is expected to become a hurricane by tonight.
Swells from Kate affecting the eastward-facing beaches in the Northwest Bahamas should gradually subside today, but will begin to affect Bermuda tonight and continue through Wednesday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
